5/6 - Intro and Kleftiko

Edward Lin's Dinner Journal

Hello! This is a blog series that will be recording the daily dinners in Cyrpus. For the upcoming month that I will be studying abroad, I will be recording what I eat, along with a photo and nutritional information. I will also briefly touch on anything exceedingly interesting hat happens during the day! So, without further ado, let's jump into the first day's dinner!

Day 1 Kleftiko

Kleftiko is a classic Cypriot dish that has an interesting narrative; the oral tradition surrounding the dish alludes to thieves who would steal lambs and hide the meat underground, and then proceed to cook the meat in improvised ovens. It really reminds me of a dish from China called Beggar's Chicken. Originating in Hangzhou, legend has it that a poor thief, after having stolen a chicken, wrapped it in lotus leaves and clay, and cooked it over an open flame. That's pretty neat!

Nutritional information
Lamb Leg -

Rice -

Vegetables - Squash                                                Carrots-

In other news, I have a canker sore in my mouth, so I'm really hoping that the excessive vitamin A from those carrots will do something. The vitamin C from the squash might be good too. What really amazes me, though, is the fact that this was all under approx. 600 calories!
